What a difference a few degrees make. Whereas October birding activity at our feeders seemed boring November is abuzz with birds. On days like these the feeders are busier then Thanksgiving weekend at the Philadelphia airport. Incoming House and Goldfinches compete for air space with Titmice, Nuthatches and Chickadees. On this gray rainy day the reds and blues of our cardinals and jays appear more vibrant. Ground feeders such as White Throated Sparrows and Juncos can be observed scratching the surface for seed. You need to look harder at the little brown birds in winter because in addition to White Throats there may be White Crowned or Song Sparrows, Pine Siskins, or Red Polls about. Without their summer colors the Goldfinches are drab. We still get about 8 to 10 at the finch feeders. Weather changes everything, I’ve even observed Bluebirds and Flickers eating the hawthorn berries behind our store. All of the woodpeckers are now regular visitors to the suet and bark butter feeders. A Yellowbellied Sapsucker has been heard up in the woods. With colder temperatures insects become difficult for birds such as woodpeckers and wrens to find and they will add suet and seed to their diet. With the bustle about the feeders we now have an occasional fly through by a Coopers Hawk.
A walk around our property reveals berries and seed clinging to plants. As a birder I know the birds will rely on our feeding them at the feeders and with the vegetation around the yard throughout the cold months ahead.
Happy Birding, Charles
