Fall is a great time to get out and enjoy not only the weather, but the cool happenings in our area. Lots of bird species migrate through our region in the fall. There are many opportunities to view the birds with a group or by yourself at the many parks and preserves in Delaware.

• The next meeting of the Delaware Ornithology Society will be on Wednesday October 21. The topic will be The Delaware Bird-A-thon and more!! The meeting will be held at the Delaware Museum of Nature and Science from 6-9pm. The Delaware Nature Society also host bird walks throughout the month, throughout the state.

• Thursday October 22, join Charles for a talk on the Birds in Autumn. Learn what the birds are up to and how to get your yard ready for winter. This talk is being held at Dewpoint Brewery in Yorklyn and begins at 6:15 pm.

• Saturday October 24, join Charles for a talk, All About Bats. Learn all the cool things that bats do for the environment and how you can help them too. This talk is being held at Longwood Gardens and begins at 1PM. Fee for the class.

• Friday October 30. Not really nature related but it looks like a good time if you love music. The Danish siren, Evior is playing at the Queen in Wilmington. She hails from the Faroese Islands and sings Nordic folk, dark art pop, electronic beats, and cinematic music. Kathy and I will be there.

• Saturday October 31. Halloween in Hockessin. Charles has been orchestrating this community event since 2009. This business-to-business trick or treat event will fill the sidewalks and shops of Hockessin with costumed children and their families. We ask everyone to please SLOW DOWN in out TOWN! 11am to 3pm.

• Saturday November 7. Charles will be setting up a table at Delaware Wild Lands location in Townsend. In conjunction with Opera Delaware DE Wild Lands is holding Flight of the Cranes. It’s billed as an Evening of Discovery from birdsong to opera. Food, drinks, music and birds on a protected habitat. You might even observe the elusive Sandhill Cranes.

• Sunday November 8. Join Charles for a talk on the Birds of Winter. Learn what the birds are up to and how to help them out this winter. This talk will take place at Longwood Gardens and begins at 2pm. Fee for the class.

• Hawk Watch is happening through November at the headquarters of the Delaware Nature Society's Ashland location. Bring your binoculars and scan the sky for migrating Hawks, Eagles, and Vultures.

• The Delaware Nature Society also hosts Bird Walks every Sunday at Bucktoe Creek Preserve, 342 Sharp Road in Avondale. 8am to 10:30am.

• Join DNS staff for Bird Banding at Bucktoe Creek Preserve every Wednesday morning.
