Upcoming Events

Fall is a great time to get out and enjoy not only the weather, but the cool happenings in our area. Lots of bird species migrate through our region in the fall. There are many opportunities to view the birds with a group or by yourself at the many parks and preserves in Delaware.


• Saturday August 31, Monthly Bird Walk at the Brandywine State Park. Bring your eyes, ears, and a comfortable pair of hiking boots. Our expert volunteer birder from the Delaware Ornithological Society will lead the group, provide tips and advice to all interested bird watchers. • Sunday September 1, Visit our friends at the Marshall Steam Museum for their monthly Steamin’ Day! Climb into an antique automobile, board one of our trains, and experience what it was like to travel at the turn of the 20th century. Tour the magnificent 1897 mansion that was home to three generations of the Marshall family. You’ll find something for everyone, age 2 to 92! 12:30 to 4:30.


• Hawkwatch begins at the Ashland Nature Center, headquarters of the Delaware Nature Society. on September 1. The watches are staffed by a professional counter every day from September 1 through November 30 (8am to 3pm). The public are welcome to drop in at any time. If you are lucky and hit the right conditions, you can enjoy the sight of dozens (sometimes hundreds!) of migrating hawks filling the air.


• Friday September 6, Birds of Bellevue 8:00 AM Take a stroll through Bellevue State Park with local experts to see what birds the park has to offer. Beginners welcome. Binoculars are available to borrow upon request. Some trails may be muddy, so dress appropriately. Meet in the parking lot by the Arts Center. Walk-ups welcome. Free, with paid park admission!


• Visit the Delaware Ornithological Society to see what walks and talks they are hosting this fall.


• DOS also has a birder’s group for younger members of the family called the Red Knots Youth Birders. Each month volunteers from DOS hold field trips for young birders and their families. Previous birding experience is not necessary! We supply loaner binoculars and spotting scopes. If your family would like to attend a trip, please RSVP to [email protected]


• On Saturday, September 14th, as part of the Delaware Coastal Cleanup DOS and the Red Knot Youth Birders will spend the morning cleaning up trash along the state’s waterways and discovering the birds that benefit from our efforts. Spaces are limited, so pre-registration is required! Fox Point State Park- Lighthouse Road, Wilmington DE 19809* *final location confirmed by event organizers closer to event date. Event time is 9am to noon.
