Little Creek Wildlife Area- Port Mahon Impoundment
This man-made coastal wetland serves as an important overwintering spot for waterfowl,
shorebirds, and other species. For this trip, our goal is to see as many different winter raptors,
diving ducks, and dabbling ducks as possible, including harriers, kestrels, mergansers, and gadwall.
DE Conservation Access Pass required
Meet at Port Mahon Road, Little Creek 19901- look for the turnoff to the parking area on the right just
before the tank farm driveway; if you reach the bay you’ve gone too far!

ChesLen Preserve
This outing brings us to the largest privately owned public nature preserve in Chester County PA.
It is home to diverse habitats, including streams, forests, fields, and globally-rare serpentine
barrens. This is a great spot to look for horned larks, common ravens, sparrows, and woodpeckers,
in addition to early spring migrants like tree swallows and rusty blackbirds.
There are no entrance fees for this preserve

Bird Survey at White Clay Creek State Park
Between 1967 and 1977, DOS members conducted weekly bird surveys to collect data on the
birdlife in one of New Castle County’s most diverse hotspots. Fifty years later, DOS is repeating
the surveys and the Red Knot Youth Birders are going to help! Much like the Christmas Bird
Count, the data that we contribute will be directly used to support bird conservation in Delaware.

Lums Pond State Park
Lums Pond State Park is the largest freshwater pond in Delaware, known for
We’ll explore the Swamp Forest and Little Jersey trails in search of gorgeous prothonotary
warblers, plus tanagers, thrushes, and wading birds like herons, egrets, and ibis.

Trips are led by DOS Youth Birding Committee members, with special guest appearances related
to specific locations or species. All youth birders must be accompanied by an adult until they are
old enough to drive themselves to the meeting spot! Red Knot Youth Birding membership is
free, but some locations may require entrance fees.
